“Meghan Chase has a secret destiny—one she could never have imagined…
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.”

“Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.
Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.”

“My name is Meghan Chase.
I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.
This time, there will be no turning back.”
My Thoughts:
Julie Kagawa jumped high on my list of favorite authors by the time I finished The Iron King (Book 1 of the Iron Fey Series). And…her books are only getting better. You know how it usually goes, first book is great and then it’s all a downhill slide until we get to the end of the last book—where the overall plot originally steered towards in the first place. Not this time though. The Iron Fey books are fresh each time out of the gate. I love the mix of faery/fey and iron. After all, fey are weak against iron…so you see where these books are going right off the bat. How do we balance the two?
There is a running message throughout the stories of waste, recycling and consumerism. Where does junk go when we’re done with it? What damage does technology do to our imagination? Or is damage at all? Is it just taking a different form? What is its effect on magic? Does magic disappear when we know longer believe in it?
One of my favorite features of young adult fiction is the love triangle. It’s fresh love in its most innocent stage. A girl and two boys, who will she choose? Who will choose her? Meghan Chase’s story is no exception. She’s caught up between two exceptional characters: Ash and Puck. They are both fantastic in their own rights. Personally, I’m an Ash fan – I just love the dark, tormented soul that he is. Puck is fun and free…and wild. Unfortunately, he also fills that requisite best-friend-forever role. He’s there with his heart on his sleeve, the great standby. Meghan’s got a lot on her plate between these two boys. Ash usually takes the lead, but she can’t always deny Puck either.
As is customary, in each book, Meghan is faced with a challenge of some sort (I don’t want to give away the plots, mind you). She’s connected to Iron…and that relationship continues to build as the books continue to be written. What remains is the impact her connection to iron will have on her, as well as the Faery world – including her two men: Ash & Puck.
There is a fourth, and final, book due for release October, 2011: The Iron Knight. I think the title says it all…wonder what’s going to happen. Anyone have any thoughts? How’s Meghan’s love life going to work out?
I’m recommending this book to anyone and everyone that reads young adult fiction, as well as those who have a love of faery books. The writing is clever and the plots suck you in…although they don’t offer much in the way of big surprises or twists. Just great relationships between the characters and enough imagination to keep things interesting.
I cannot wait until The Iron Knight!!
